It is made of felt - the material that Margrete Steiff worked with in 1877 in her Filz-Konfektionswaren-Geschaft (Ready-Made Felt Goods Shop) and from which she produced the legendary "little elephant" - the first soft stuffed animal in the world. Since the Steiff trademark "Button in Ear" had not yet been introduced in 1898, the year in which this rattle was "born", this replica bears the first official button with the elephant symbol.
